2. 역사

리버풀 대학교는 1881년 유니버시티 칼리지 리버풀(University College Liverpool)로 설립되었으며,^[13] 1884년에 빅토리아 대학교의 일부가 되었다. 1894년, 이 대학의 교수였던 올리버 로지는 세계 최초로 공개 라디오 전송을 했으며, 2년 후에는 영국 최초로 외과적 엑스선 촬영을 했다.^[14]

1903년 왕립 헌장과 의회법에 따라 자체 학위를 수여할 수 있는 독립적인 대학교가 되었다. 그 후 찰스 셰링턴 경의 시냅스 발견, 윌리엄 블레어-벨의 암 치료 화학요법 연구, 제임스 채드윅 경과 조지프 로트블랫 경의 원자 폭탄 개발 기여 등 주요 발전이 있었다.^[14]

1994년 러셀 그룹의 창립 멤버였으며, 2004년에는 N8 그룹의 창립 멤버였다. 21세기에는 CERN의 거대 강입자 충돌기 건설에 참여했다.^[16]

과학, 의학, 경제학 및 평화 분야에서 10명의 노벨상 수상자를 배출했다. 로널드 로스 경, 찰스 바클라, 마틴 루이스 펄, 찰스 셰링턴 경, 제임스 채드윅 경, 로버트 로빈슨 경, 하 고빈드 코라나, 로드니 포터, 로널드 코스, 조지프 로트블랫 교수가 있다.^[19]

2018년에는 103개 이상의 연구 전문 분야 코스를 개설했으며, 2021년 9월에는 비틀즈학 석사 학위 과정을 개설했다.^[72]
